Paper Review: Different Cortical Activation Patterns during Voluntary Eccentric and Concentric Muscle Contractions: An fMRI Study

Kwon YH, JW Park: Different Cortical Activation Patterns during Voluntary Eccentric and Concentric Muscle Contractions: An fMRI Study. NeuroRehabilitation, Vol 29, pp. 253-259, 2011.

“(…) Concentric and eccentric muscle contractions have distinct differences in their neuromuscular and neurophysiologic characteristics. (…) In the study (…) eccentric and concentric muscle contractions induced quite different patterns of cortical activity respectively. These findings might be attributed to different strategy of neuro-motor processing and a higher level of cognitive demand for the performance of motor task with a higher degree of difficulty such as that required during eccentric contractions in comparison of concentric contractions. Paper Review: Influence of Competition on Performance and Pacing during Cycling Exercise

Corbett, J., M. Barwood, A. Ouzounoglou, R. Thelwell, M. Dicks: Influence of Competition on Performance and Pacing during Cycling Exercise. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 44, No. 3, pp. 509-515, 2012.

“(…) Head-to-head competition encourages participants to increase their performance. This occurs primarily via an increased anaerobic energy yield, which seems to be centrally mediated, and is consistent with the concept of a physiologic reserve. (…)”
